4 Killer Benefits of Mixing Up Your Workouts

DYK repeating the same workout over and over again isn’t going to help you maximize your results? Not only does your body adjust quickly, so you’re not actually challenging yourself, it can make your routine feel monotonous and boring after just a few weeks, leading you down a quick path to burnout. Instead, it’s good to learn how to mix up your workouts to keep things challenging for both your mind and your body. Take a look at some of the other benefits of changing up your workouts down below!
Avoid Boredom and Plateau
As the old saying goes, “variety is the spice of life!” Adding a little variety to your exercise routine is a great way to keep your workouts interesting and help you adhere to your workout routine. In fact, Ace Fitness recommends varying your workouts for two main reasons: (1) to prevent boredom and (2) to avoid or delay a plateau. Our own exercise and nutritional specialist, MacKenzie Rowand, CSCS, NASM-CNC, also says “changing things up can help prevent burnout, as a lot of times repetitive exercise leads to fatigue and a lack of desire to continue working out.”
While some people might enjoy a predictable fitness routine and don’t mind hitting a plateau at times, it’s important to know when it’s time to mix things up and get those goals in motion again. Luckily, as a 9Rounder, you get a brand-new workout every single day at your local studio. Our fitness programming team makes sure to rotate different moves each week to keep our KILLER workouts challenging and fun, no matter what day of the week you visit!
Targeting More Muscles
You can only target a set number of muscles when you do the same moves every time you work out but opening up your routine to more types of exercises can help you build strength in other areas. There are tons of smaller muscles throughout your body that often get neglected when you stick to the same, comfortable moves during your workout. So, it’s important to try new moves and switch up your workouts to make sure you’re getting full-body results and building strength all over, not just in one area.
If you ever feel like a particular move isn’t challenging you enough during your KILLER workouts, your Champion Trainer can help you increase the intensity of the round. For example, if squats are too easy for you, you can try adding weights or performing a squat jump instead to continue challenging yourself to grow stronger.
Improved Strength and Mobility
Performing a variety of exercises throughout the week can help you encompass more forms of movement, which can help you improve your overall strength and mobility. One of the main benefits of regular exercise is a gradual improvement in your daily, functional movements, such as bending down to pick something up or running around the yard with your kids. The more types of exercises you try, the more likely you are to cover every basis of movement that you encounter in your daily life. This makes you all-around more capable of doing what you enjoy throughout the week in addition to making you more confident during your workouts.
Overuse Injury Prevention
When you have a repetitive fitness routine that doesn’t change much from day to day, you might be putting yourself at risk for an overuse injury. According to the Mayo Clinic, an overuse injury is any type of muscle or joint injury, such as tendinitis or a stress fracture, that's caused by recurring trauma. Examples of moves that can cause this type of trauma if done too frequently are squats, push-ups, burpees, etc.
Instead of forcing your body to do these moves over and over again each day, you can mix things up with different exercises that target new muscle groups while giving others a break. For example, if you always do squats for your leg exercises, you can try doing lunges or donkey kicks instead to reach a different set of muscles.
